The Time I Tried to Make a Summer Reading List

When I was younger one of my favorite things to do in the summer was join the library’s summer reading program. Typically there would be a little Candy Land board inspired map with small checkpoints on them. We would check out as many books as possible to meet the checkpoints and receive the prize at each one. They were little dumb things like bookmarks or the highly coveted Pizza Hut personal pan pizza coupon. Flash forward to full on adulthood and the summer reading list just becomes a thing of the past, something you do on an airplane or while sitting on the beach. I mean there’s nothing wrong with those things, but where is the gratification? Do I have to pay for my own personal pan pizza (do those even exist anymore?)?

Every summer there’s a thousand summer reading lists where people tell us what we should be reading. Everything from the hottest fiction book (which is apparently Rich People Problems) to those books that are supposed to make our lives better. I mentioned in my summer bucket list my intention to read 3 New York Times Best Sellers so, of course, that meant making a list of books I want to read. Here we are, it’s nearly August, and I have yet to finish one. See, my intentions were good, but I have to try harder to accomplish this. Below you’ll find some of the books I still plan to shove into what’s left of my summer vacation.

Style Inspo: Martha Hunt

I’ve been so incredibly bored with my closet lately. There hasn’t been a single day this week (except maybe one) where I haven’t reached for a light, baggy sweater and jeans. It might be a mood based thing (everything seems to suck) or maybe it’s just so hot & humid out I just don’t want to be bothered. Unfortunately, I have occasions coming up where surely people will not want to see my laziness/mood on full display. SO I went in search of inspiration.Β What is cool right now? What are people wearing? What do I wish I could pull off as some #GOALS?

Enter Martha Hunt. I don’t know much about her other than she’s a Victoria’s Secret model and a member of Taylor Swift’s “squad.” Whatever that is…After seeing an outfit I could really pull off, I fell into a complete rabbit hole looking at her style. Victoria’s Secret models are my favorite source of life inspo. I’m not even gonna lie I love doing Youtube work outs that claim I can get Victoria’s Secret abs, legs, or whatever other body part you can name. I WISH I could have abs this great. Anyway, Martha’s style is sexy and just plain cool. There were so many outfits I wanted to copy instantly. Most of them were simple but well put together and eye catching.

Below you’ll find some of my favorites and selected pieces to recreate them.

Links I Love 002

Well, the weekend is finally upon us. I will be taking my heartbroken little self to see The Big Sick. This might possibly be a terrible idea considering it is being called one, if not the, greatest romantic comedy in some time. I suppose maybe there’s an upside or some wishful thinking that maybe, just maybe, it will all work out someday. Who knows? If all else fails I will simply embarrass myself with a full on public cry.

I hope everyone has a lovely weekend, but first here’s some really fun and interesting stuff from across the web. Enjoy!

3 Outfits: Zara

Ah Zara, the one place I can be found when it feels like everything in the world isn’t going that great. Okay maybe I should find better ways of dealing with unpleasant emotions rather than spending money or valuable time wandering around Zara. Hey, to each their own. Regardless, I think it’s pretty well known Zara is one of my all time favorite places to shop. One of their gigantic sales is still going on, but an all new collection has just hit the web. There’s a pair of very polarizing leggings.

Styling Trendy Summer Shorts

I know in the past I’ve shared my trials and tribulations with shorts. After countless summers of wearing uncomfortable jeans and unflattering long “jorts” due to self-confidence issues, I finally came to a happy place where I can wear shorts of all kinds. Now I know what kind of shorts I wear the most: denim, pull on, or sworts. Denim shorts are wardrobe staples, pull on shorts are perfect for relaxing or running errands, and, well, sworts are the laziest shorts in the world. So rather than be so boring I decided to do a little research and see what shorts were the most trendy this summer.

Styling-Trendy-Summer-Shorts.pngAs you can see above; Basically the answer was literally any pair of shorts ever. There was leather or leather effect (aka the warm weather sibling of leather pants), and crepe shorts (which are just really loose & flowy Bermuda shorts). Printed shorts ala the 1990s are big (especially florals), and the staples I’ve mentioned above. I felt pretty overwhelmed, but I decided to play around with it a bit. One thing I tried to be aware of is shorts are warm weather clothes so there’s no ankle boots or thin heels. I think that ankle boots are fine with shorts within reason, but it’s a personal preference. I do it depending on the occasion and outfit. Thin heels and shorts just feel so Pinterest to me so I avoid them at all costs (plus I’m clumsy). When wearing shorts I avoid high top sneakers because they cut off my legs at a certain point making me appear shorter. At the end of the day styling any shorts is a personal preference, but below hopefully you’ll find some new inspiration or try a new type of shorts.

Surviving the Heat: Summer Wellness

Initially when I sat down to write this post I wanted to share some things I do to beat the crazy heat during the summer. Shortly I realized it’s slightly different for everyone and the biggest tip of them all really is just to stay inside and avoid it all. Then I realized maybe it’s best to just share some of the wellness ideas I’m currently incorporating into my life instead. It’s summer and I’m currently existing in the harsh Arizona hellscape so I guess these are currently my best tips for surviving the heat.

Mix 08 Summer Take 2

Gather round boys and girls it’s time for another monthly playlist. Summer is probably one of the easiest times to make mixes. They just kind of write themselves. There’s always something playing that sticks with me and creates a memory for years to come. Whether it’s enjoying a nice meal with friends at a restaurant or just simply driving in the car when something funny happens, a memory has the ability to stick to these songs like glue (for better or worse). Rather than zone in on a particular summery theme like pool parties, BBQs, or road trips, I decided to try something a little different.
