I’ll be straight up honest; getting dressed when it’s 110+ degrees outside is an absolute chore. We’ve had a heat advisory for about a week now, and despite living here my entire life I’m not used to it. There’s no way anyone can get used to walking outside and practically not be able to breathe. Enough about the weather, right? It’s summer and it’s gonna be hot in the Northern Hemisphere.
When you don’t feel like putting a ton of effort into getting dressed you come to appreciate stylish pictures on the internet. There’s just a lot of browsing Tumblr in my lazy Target shorts. (#honesty) There are only so many fabric options, colors, and ways to work with what you’ve got when you have three incredibly long months ahead. These are some of my favorite style inspo images I’ve compiled on the style tag of my Tumblr (Found here). They are definitely giving me the summer vibes I need to get my sh*t together and get dressed.
Jane Birkin is an English actress and singer who is most frequently cited as a style icon particularly when it comes to 1970s or French girl fashion. Jane is well known for her partnership with singer Serge Gainsbourg during the 1970s, and for being the namesake of the famous Hermes handbag. Most recently the status symbol of the bag has undergone a change when she asked her name be removed due to the cruel way the bags were made.
I picked up a faux leather mini skirt at Zara while shopping for my recent vacation to Las Vegas. It was on sale and I figured might as well. I really liked it when I tried it on in the dressing room despite not really being sure what I would pair it with on a night out (or any other time really). In the picture above you can see it has a cinched waistband and pockets. Pockets are essential as any girl knows.
A faux leather mini skirt can give any wardrobe a little edginess without trying too hard. It can be paired with a feminine blouse or camisole to tone down the harshness of the leather or it can be worn with a simple t-shirt to make it look more casual. I’ve brainstormed a few ways to rock the mini with the hopes it gets more use than my faux leather birdcage skirt.
One of my very favorite actresses growing up was Kirsten Dunst. I would see everything that she was in, and, for a short time, Bring It On was my favorite thing in the world. Thanks cheerleading…Drop Dead Gorgeous was my “home sick” movie despite the humor being possibly too dark for a middle school girl to be repeating. Just the other day I saw her Variety cover shoot with Sofia Coppola (another favorite) and was utterly in love with the looks. They are so classic and perfectly tailored. Serious heart eyes emoji.
Shortly after I fell into a rabbit hole looking at her street style across the internet. Her red carpet style has been called “daring,” but her every day style is so chic. She might not wear the most trendy designer supplied pieces, but everything she chooses is quirky and suits her personality. One thing I really enjoy about her style is that we are in the same age bracket relatively so these looks are wholly age appropriate. Many of them have pieces I already own (which is one thing I love when looking at style) and they are achievable. It’s not some “off duty” model style that feels alien and uncomfortable to wear grocery shopping which is cool. I think it’s really cool to have with such similar style to mine to look to for more inspiration.
Olivia Culpo is a woman of many hats. She’s an actress, cellist, and former beauty queen, but most of all she has terrific style. This makes her eligible to be a source of style inspiration (and subject of Style Crush). I didn’t know much about her other than seeing her on random social media posts during events where style is heavily prevalent.
Olivia was named Miss USA in 2012 and Miss Universe the same year. I’m not entirely sure how Miss Universe works because the entire universe (aliens) aren’t invited to compete? Regardless, from what I’ve learned Olivia’s style combines classic staples with current trends in a fun, flirty way. Some of her staples include bodysuits and high waisted jeans, and she even praises looking to places like Zara and Topshop for trendy pieces that can be worn year after year (#same).
What I really like about her style is she boldly takes on trends like the completely sheer top and keeps them looking classy (when it very easily can go south….fast). Another thing I like is her ability to rock an entire outfit of white pieces. Sure, solid black is a classic but changing it up to white is incredibly polished and chic. One thing I learned during this process is she believes in getting dressed in the moment. She doesn’t plan her outfits ahead of time but rather uses her mood to dictate what she wears to portray how she feels. That’s definitely something worth trying.
As always below are some looks worth trying out but with a few minor changes here and there.
Bodysuit, Leather leggings, Flats, Aviators, Handbag, Jacket
I’ve been trying to change up my style for spring. Stepping outside my comfort zone of jeans and a simple tee has been hard. I wore dresses twice now and even shorts (yes, outside my apartment!). But I still feel like I’m lacking in the style department.
Rather than just wearing everything in the spring J. Crew catalog, I found about a weeks worth of spring style inspiration worth copying.
Sunglasses, Jogger set, Handbag, Sneakers
While coming up with the text to accompany this post, I tried to think of a way to explain what #GOALS means. There are all kinds of goals from fitness goals to relationship goals all of which are unique to the people perceiving them. According to a quite bitter person on Urban Dictionary, being GOALS means being someone everyone sucks up to and lives an incredibly staged Instagram life in order to be validated by likes and comments.
To put it nicely, being #GOALS means being something to aspire to. Whether you stage your Instagrams or not (everyone is guilty of this at one time or another) you can still be #GOALS to your loyal following. Nerdy COM major statement in 3..2..1….Social media has given us the power to curate the spaces we want based on the type of person we want to be seen as. Yes that often means staging our photos and retouching those photos so they look better and give off the perfect vibes.
Enter Emily Ratajkowski who is Instagram #GOALS among other types of goals. Her feed is filled with images of tropical locales, bikini shots (#fitnessgoals), and tons of fashion inspo. Sure pulling off her style might be a little difficult sometimes and there’s about a 0% chance of me ever posting an instagram in sworts and a bra, but if you’re daring enough to try her looks many can translate fine to regular life. I would LOVE if my Instagram feed was half as good as hers.
These are some of my favorite regular, every day style looks featured on her Instagram.
Bodysuit, Denim Shorts, Belt, Basic Tee, Sunglasses, Denim Cutoffs
