Styled: Kylie Jenner Graphic Tee

Okay the title of this blog might be a little off-putting, but hear me out. I truly don’t know why Kylie Jenner has an online shop filled with clothing (most of which is sold out) and cosmetics, but she does. Get those dollars, Girl. I am not a Kardashian-Jenner fan and, in fact, the only episodes I have seen of that show were courtesy of my best friend, Rachael. She knows if she turns on anything I can make commentary on purely out of confusion I can be entertained and distracted for hours. That said I’m not entirely pop culture blind & I know their effect on the planet (good or bad).

I’ve been known to look at Kendall for fashion inspo, and while I can’t quite figure out Kylie, Kendall I can get behind. Enter this tee. My best friend (personal assistant and stylist) insisted I consider adding this t-shirt to my large graphic tee collection. So I decided to play around & Style it just in case it ends up in my closet through some wine induced late night shopping.

Trend Report: Political Statement Tees

Political statement tees were all over the runway during fashion month. Considering this current political climate it’s not hard to understand why. The slogan tee trend isn’t exactly new. As someone growing up in the 90s and early 2000s, slogan tees where everywhere. I was sent to the office and my mother had to leave work to bring me a new shirt because the middle school deemed my “boyz r toyz” Pinocchio tee against school rules. Now I’ll admit as a 13-year-old that shirt doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but everyone wore them. I happily joined in.

The reason we remember these shirts many years later (not because my mom still brings it up as some kind of parenting annoyance) is because we begin to associate people with the messages they are sending. Whether you know the person or not what they choose to display on their shirt makes you create a label of that person. I don’t believe any girl my age is truly “50% angel, 50% devil” and I definitely don’t think “boyz r toyz.” I don’t even know what that means nor how to make a boy a toy. These shirts have a history rooted in the 60s and 70s when expressing your personality was beginning to be accepted by society. There were social causes, catch phrases, and segments of society that subscribe to their own norms.

What originally began as anti-war protest (I love my John Lennon anti-war shirt still) statements has now transitioned into more feminist leaning options. Speaking your stance has become a norm again today though the use of social media and the ways it filters into our pop culture lexicon. The trend walks a fine line because it’s obviously being capitalized on by the fashion industry. They will be seen everywhere especially in fast fashion stores, but there are plenty of shirts out there (some here) that donate their proceeds to charities and organizations that support and further women’s rights. No matter where you get them the idea is the same. You’re speaking your mind, taking a stance, and it’s a message you’ll be proud to share for years to come.

I say that because we have far more photographic evidence than we did in the early 2000s. The messages we send stay around longer than the amount of time I ever wore that dumb Pinocchio shirt. I’m sure you can still get a “boyz r toyz” slogan tee if that’s your thing, but maybe try one of these better, political options instead.

The Arizona Girl Wardrobe

Okay so maybe I can’t speak for all Arizona girls since we each have individual styles, but have seen plenty of capsule wardrobe blog posts so I’m throwing my figurative hat into the ring. Living in a place where it’s sunny and warm 8 months of the year has its perks. All of these pieces can be worn pretty much all year-long. These are the pieces that make up just the base of my wardrobe. There are plenty of trendy pieces and seasonal items that make their way in and out throughout the year. So I’ve gathered as many of my real life closet staples as I could for this post.

The goal of the Arizona wardrobe is simple: avoid the heat. Looking like a bright red tomato is the opposite of fashionable. I try to dress simply and wear a lot of black and white. Black can be tricky when it comes to the summer months, but not impossible. That’s where camisoles, tank tops, and baggy tees come in. When building a wardrobe I try to border comfort and relaxation without approaching lazy. I prefer things I can just toss on in a hurry and dress up when needed.

These are the kinds of things I wear most frequently and are staples in my closet. They mix and match easily so even when I have nothing to wear I still have plenty to wear.  There is one major necessity when it comes to dressing like a true Arizona girl: the Arizona State branded clothes. If you go to ASU and you don’t wear ASU branded clothes, did you really ever go there at all? I only wear the PINK college collection because if I’m gonna do it, I’m gonna do it well my friends.

Style Inspiration: Holiday Parties

Holiday party season has been in full swing for awhile now, but there’s no doubt going to be an increase of parties in the coming days. So, better late than never with my guide to holiday dressing. Between the holidays and New Years Eve, there’s plenty of opportunities to rock your most stylish, fashion forward outfit for a night out on the town. No lie, I’ve already started thinking about my New Years Eve look even though I think wearing a dress in the winter is awful. Maybe I’ll switch to some coated jeans….

When it comes to parties I have one rule: comfort. If you don’t feel comfortable in something it will definitely come across that way and you’ll be more focused on how you look rather than spreading cheer and taking in the festivities with your loved ones. That said, I have chosen some really great outfits for style inspiration. Mainly because I can only wear my pug sweater to just one party…the novelty wears off. The looks are festive and can be done with pieces you most likely already own or by adding pieces last minute. There are even a few that are office or office party friendly and translate well from work to party mode in a flash.

Sweater Weather

I won’t lie one of the best things about colder weather is sweaters. Not simply because they keep one warm when it’s pretty frigid out, but I don’t have to constantly think about all of the insecurities I may have about my arms or waistline. There are so many different styles of sweaters that it’s simple to come up with a standard set of sweater essentials.

To create the essential sweater set there are some key styles to include. V-neck sweaters are perfect for layering with crisp button downs underneath (very J. Crew) while cable knits are more chunky, warmer, and pair perfectly with boyfriend jeans. Right now the mock-neck is trendy because it’s a really great silhouette without feeling like being choked by a turtleneck. That said, turtlenecks are classic and my favorite, from Zara, are thin and don’t at all make me feel like some kind of elementary school teacher in the 90s. I’m not a huge turtleneck fan, it feels really suffocating at times, but I took a chance on the Zara ones and they are absolutely perfect. Cashmere is an incredibly stylish luxurious classic that is essential to any closet.

Style Crush: Olivia Palermo

Olivia Palermo is most known for her role on the MTV show The City which was a spin-off of The Hills which aired from 2008 to 2010. Since the show ended she has been a model, socialite, guest judge on Project Runway, and become incredibly well-known for her style. So much so she just became global style embassador for Banana Republic, and when Googling her, “street style” is one of the most common things being searched. She has made an interesting imprint on the style world for mixing bold pieces with casual classics and embracing trends head on. She is often one of the most photographed street style subjects during fashion month.

Now, at first when she was suggested to me, I didn’t think I’d really love many of her looks. We all know I’m pretty basic and classic (okay maybe the word here is boring), but when researching looks I realized that there were so many of her looks I truly wish I could pull off. I was told I would love her collection with Chelsea28 (and I did) and that although some of her pieces were a bit more “wild” I could still find something to love. This was absolutely true. What I really enjoyed about her style after digging deeper is how polished she consistently looks no matter if it’s just stepping out to walk her dog or walking into the next biggest fashion show. Her style is a perfect mix of comfortable and chic so there’s always something that fits the occasion.

There are plenty of looks that are easily pulled off or just changed around a little bit. I really love how effortless most of the looks appear to be which makes them even easier to get the look. Part of evolving stylistically means pulling from new influences, and I am definitely going to be adding some of her most polished looks into my style file cabinet.

Ugh, who says file cabinet anymore…
